EDMONTON - U.S. quick-service restaurant chain Smashburger is expanding into Canada with plans to open its first stores in Calgary and Edmonton.

The chain announced Tuesday it has signed its first two lease agreements in the Calgary market for company-operated stores, with the first location to open in 2012.

The Denver-based company plans to open 10 to 15 locations in Calgary and Edmonton over time.

“Canada is a very attractive market to us and we believe we are bringing a unique, premium dining experience at a competitive price point to local residents,” Smashburger CEO Dave Prokupek said.

It is also seeking franchisees in Vancouver and Toronto. The chain calls itself the fastest-growing fast-casual “better burger” chain in the United States, with 127 restaurants.

It’s the second international foray for the company, following recent franchise agreements in the Middle East.
