Relish Gourmet Burgers to open franchise in Halifax

A gourmet burger chain based in New Brunswick wants to bring the “burger experience” to Nova Scotia.

Relish Gourmet Burgers of Fredericton plans to have one of its franchises up and running in the vacant Blockbuster Video site on Quinpool Road in Halifax by the end of May. By year’s end, it plans to open another restaurant in Antigonish.

“There are a lot of savvy food people in Halifax and it’s the biggest city in the Maritimes,” company co-founder Ray Henry said Friday. “Exposure is critical for us there.”

Henry said the Quinpool Road restaurant will hold 40 tables. If it works out, the chain may open another franchise further downtown in Halifax.

“We’re excited to be in the Quinpool Road area,” he said. “We like the area and the vibe, and there’s lots of foot and car traffic.”

Relish Gourmet Burgers, which has been in business just over two years, has five franchises in New Brunswick. In addition to Halifax and Antigonish, it plans to open a new restaurant in Portland, Maine.

“We’re a burger experience,” said Henry. “We like to provide a feel-good high-energy vibe in our stores.”
